Territorial fight going on for occupancy!

We purchased our box last year and throughout first lockdown were enthralled with blue tits, from beginning to end. This year two Great Tits started investigating the box about a month ago but no nest building. Around 9/4 two blue tits suddenly arrived and after a lot of investigating, for two consecutive days were in and out nest building. However, two days ago, the Great Tits arrived back and an almighty battle has been going on. We have an apple tree beside the box which is fixed to the garage wall and our TV is right beside the window. Now we have made the entrance smaller by ******** on a piece of hardwood with a penny sized hole to try and sort things out. The blue tits are back and although she seems to be still forming the nest, is extracting some of the nesting material and dumping it outside the box. Is this perhaps because the Great Tit has been in the box and left some trace of herself? I know we should let nature take its course. Who should win - first come or first to start construction!!! Anyone else seen such behaviour re discarding some of the bedding material? We have loved our box set up and found your company so helpful with our early installation problems.

Green Feathers

Wow! We always love hearing about what people see on their cameras and this certainly sounds very dramatic! It just goes to show how territorial birds can be when it comes to nesting season. I've personally not seen birds discarding nesting material before but I think your theory is convincing.
